Sustainability scholars are advanced trainees in psychiatry who use their special interest day each week to work with the RCPsych Sustainability committee for a period of one year.
This is a programme aimed at developing high achieving trainees knowledge and skills in leadership and sustainable quality improvement. Scholars get a dedicated study budget for their project and training and mentoring throughout the year.
Meet our Sustainability scholars
Dr Dasal Abayaratne
Dasal is an ST5 in medical psychotherapy and general adult psychiatry carrying out his training at Sheffield Health and Social Care (SHSC) NHS Foundation trust.
During his time as a sustainability scholar he will be reviewing trust processes with an aim to reduce journeys and offer low carbon alternatives where possible. This will include expanding a pilot staff electric bike-sharing scheme for community visits and working collaboratively with neighbouring trusts, local government and third sector organisations. He also aims to promote and establish sustainable mental health practice and multi-disciplinary quality improvement across the Yorkshire region.
Dr Kathryn Speedy
Kathryn is an ST4 in Child and Adolescent Mental Health in South Wales.
Her sustainability project for this year is yet to be finalised, so watch this space for developments.
